Sara Smith, also known as Runner 8, is one of the most dependable runners for Abel Township.

History[]

Pre-apocalypse[]

Sara was raised as a Catholic.[1]

When Sara was a teenager, she had a friend whose parents belonged to a tennis clubs with private instructors, and so that friend always beat her at tennis whenever they had a match. Sara eventually decided she was going to beat her, so she spent all summer practicing while her friend was on holiday. When they had their next match, Sara's friend was unable to return a single one of Sara's shots.[2]

Sara ran a lot at school and college.[3]

Sara later got married and had two sons.[3]

Sara claims to have had a "boring bureaucratic job" in an office before the apocalypse.[4]

Early Apocalypse[]

Sara's husband and two sons were all infected and turned. Sara killed them herself with a shovel.[3]

Sara arrived at Mullins Military Base just after the first outbreak. She was given an injection that they said was a vaccine for the zombie virus. She also became involved in Project Greenshoot. Sara eventually made her way south to Abel Township, although she stayed in contact with many people from Mullins.[3]

While Sara and Janine de Luca are out looking for supplies, they come across something strange at Jameson Hester Stadium: a few hundred zombie corpses, each killed with a perfect headshot, and surrounded by functional guns dropped on the ground.[5]

5K Training[]

Sara is present when the new Runner Five arrives in Abel for the first time. Among the noise of the crowd, she asks what they were doing on that helicopter, and then quietly wonders (possibly to Janine) if Five is the person assigned to Project Greenshoot.[6][7]

Sara talks to Janine in private. Janine asks if Sara has made contact with Runner Five yet, which she hasn't. Janine asks if Sara thinks they can trust Runner Five. Sara's not sure yet. Sara tries to get Janine to tell her what Mullins is really looking for, but Janine says that it's classified. They promise to keep each other up to date on the situation.[8]

Sara pops into the comms shack while Runner Five is on the way to Bert Airfield. She's impressed by Five's speed and notes that they'll have to go out on a run together sometime - maybe a run to the chopper they came down in.[9]

Season One[]

Sara is sent out to distract the zombies after Abel's gates get jammed open. She gets paired up with Runner Five and decides to use this opportunity to talk with them. Sara uses her coughing as an excuse to turn off the transmitter and shut Sam out of the conversation. Sara points out that it's strange how somebody fired a rocket launcher at a helicopter that was just supposed to be delivering supplies. She questions whether Five was actually the person Mullins sent over in that helicopter or if Five is just pretending to be that person. Sara is very suspicious of the circumstances surrounding Five's arrival at Abel and delivers a thinly-veiled threat as she shoots the zombies chasing them.[10]

Sara is sent to the nearby settlement of Brunswick in order to help them with a fire that broke out. She helps evacuate everyone to the woods, only to run into Runner Five who's coming to warn Brunswick about an approaching zombie horde. Sara heads back to Brunswick to fortify one of the unburned buildings while Five goes to warn everyone in the woods. Sara and Five take shelter with the Brunswick residents until Abel can send more runners to deal with the zombies.[11]

Sara joins Five on a run to the helicopter they came down in, officially to collect the supplies it was carrying but Sara's real goal is to determine Five's identity. Janine cuts the power to the comms shack as Sara and Five approach the chopper. The pilot is still inside, recently reanimated. Sara gets Five to be the distraction while she searches the chopper. She manages to find the supplies as well as Five's ID from Mullins, confirming that Five really was the person they sent over. Sara implies that she would have killed Five if she'd found someone else's ID. On the way back to Abel, Sara tells Five that they'll have to talk sometime about Project Greenshoot.[3]

Janine sends Sara and Five after a traitor, Tess, who has stolen valuable technology and information from Abel and is heading to New Canton. Along the way, Sara tells Janine that Five is trustworthy, and tells Five that she trusts Janine as well. Sara says that she's with the military, and Project Greenshoot is being put on hold until they can figure out what's going on with the rocket launcher attack and everything else. Sara and Five catch up to Tess and Sara knocks her out. They carry her to the upper floor of a nearby shed, leave her a weapon to defend herself with, then take the stolen goods back to Abel.[12]

Sara, Five, and Jody go out on a scouting mission. Sara remarks that she thought it would just be her and Five - presumably wanting another chance to talk with Five in private - but three people is standard for a scouting mission. It's supposed to be a simple run to check on an area outside of the camera range, but Jody hears some odd musical tones followed by gunshots. They follow the noise and discover a pile of about forty dead zombies, each killed with a single shot to the forehead. Even stranger, there are loaded guns piled up all around them. Sara mentions that this is just like what she saw before at Jameson Hester Stadium. Before they can investigate further, a group of twenty zombies appears nearby. The runners gather up as many guns as they can carry and head back towards Abel, but the zombies manage to keep pace with them. In fact, the zombies are running as well. Sam sends out Runners Thirteen and Fourteen to cover them with rifles and everyone makes it safely back into Abel.[13]

Jack and Eugene from Radio Abel record a segment where they ask various questions to the residents of Abel Township. When they ask Sara what she's thankful for, she says the walls of Janine's farmhouse.[14] They ask what her preferred weapon is and she says a loaded pistol.[15]

Sara takes Runner Five, Sam, and Maxine down into the armoury. She gives Maxine an ultraviolet scope to look at the parts of Patient 29's file that have been blacked out with marker. Maxine learns that Patient 29 previously worked at the Simpson's Corner Shop, so Sara and Five go to check it out. On the way there, a helicopter passes by them. Not long after that, they hear the sound of explosions and see a plume of smoke rising. They see the helicopter fly off. When they reach the shop, they discover that it has been destroyed. Sara examines the burning remains and finds that the building was much more than just a corner shop - it had a fully functional industrial lab in the basement.[16]

Maxine directs Sara and Five to Professor Van Ark's house in the hopes of learning where he is and what he's been doing. When they get there, they find Van Ark himself. Sara chases him down and handcuffs him to herself to prevent him from getting away, but not before he fires his pistol which attracts all of the nearby zombies. As they run, they hear some unusual tones. Van Ark leads Five and Eight to a door they can use to escape, only to be ambushed and bitten by a zombie waiting on the other side. Sara quickly dispatches the zombie and they flee through the door. Van Ark begins coughing and offers to lead the other zombies away before he turns. Sara unlocks the cuffs. Van Ark tells Maxine that he saw Paula alive at the Jeffro Complex, then runs off toward the zombie horde. Sara and Five climb to the top of a nearby water tower to wait for rescue.[17]

Sara, Five, and Maxine head back to Hertston to investigate the remains of the Simpson's Corner Shop. There they meet a man named Ephraim Whately who has been listening to New Canton's radio transmissions. He pulls out his radio to demonstrate and they all hear Nadia saying that a large number of New Canton's troops are headed for the Jeffro Complex. After failing to find anything conclusive at the corner shop, the group decides to head for Jeffro, accompanied by Ephraim. He makes a quick stop at his weapons cache and Sara takes the opportunity to steal a few flashbangs from him, with the help of Five. Ephraim helps the group sneak into the facility, only to lead them directly into a trap - one set by Professor Van Ark, who is still alive with a healed bite wound on his arm. Sara sets off a flashbang as a distraction, allowing her, Five, and Maxine to sneak away. They hear Paula's voice, but it's only a recording. Van Ark and his soldiers corner them again, but a series of explosions gives them the chance to get away. They meet Archie Jensen and New Canton Runner Five, who had set off the explosions to help them out. Archie says Van Ark got away, but mentions she used to work with Van Ark a long time ago. She asks them if they know someone named "Paula".[1][18]

Sara and Five are sent out with the New Canton headset to see if they can listen in on New Canton's plans. During the run, Sara turns off her microphone to talk with Five privately. She fills them in the various organizations that have come into power since the start of the apocalypse, and tells them that Project Greenshoot involves something important in Abel Township that the military is interested in. Before she can say much more, they hear gunshots. The New Canton operator, Nadia, assumes that the gunshots are from Abel firing on New Canton runners, and she announces that New Canton will be raiding Abel Township within the next 24 hours. Sam calls Sara and Five back home to prepare for the attack.[19]

New Canton's raid is interrupted by a massive horde of zombies from the north. Sara is sent to deliver noisemakers to the other runners in the field. They all split up to try and lead as many zombies away from Abel as possible. Sara and Five head towards Imran Park to lead their zombies into a gorge. They climb to the top of a hill where Sam asks them to keep a lookout, since his cameras are still down. Sara pulls out some binoculars and reports on the general situation. Then she sees something unusual and asks Five for a second opinion. Five confirms what Sara saw: a group of ten zombies carrying a rocket launcher towards Abel. The rocket launcher is fired, causing a huge explosion that knocks Sara out.[20]

Sara awakens to discover a wound on her leg and suspects she may have been bitten by a crawler while she was down. She wakes up Five, who was also knocked unconscious, and gives them an important message to give Janine: before every zombie attack, Sara heard the same unusual tone sounds. Sara then runs off, leading the zombies away from Five.[21]

Season Two[]

Sara spends five days walking to the coast, expecting to start turning at any moment. When she does not turn and the zombies continue to follow her, she speculates that what actually bit her may have been one of the wild dogs that tend to follow zombie hordes and scavenge from them.[22]

The zombies chase Sara to the docks, where she boards a small boat and heads out to sea. The fuel runs out and she spends five days drifting. Eventually a passing ship, the Aurora, picks her up.[23]

Sara asks the doctor onboard the Aurora to check her bite wound. The doctor confirms that it came from a dog, not a zombie.[22]

Sara is presumed dead when she fails to return to Abel Township. Janine and the remaining runners hold a memorial for her.[24]

When the Aurora docks so the survivors can search for food, one of them gets bitten but doesn't tell anyone. This person inevitably becomes a zombie and ends up infecting most of the people on the ship. Sara tells the captain to send out a distress signal asking Abel Township for help. Sara knows that they probably think she's dead, so she can't use her own name; they'll think it's a trap. Instead she tells the captain to ask for Runner Five; Sara knows that she can trust Five and hopes they'll be curious enough to come and investigate.[23]

When Runner Five arrives on the Aurora along with Jody and Simon, Sara saves them from the pursuing zombies by dropping a lifeboat to block the path.[25]

Sara leads the other runners to the bridge, and they escort the survivors of the Aurora to shore. The captain mentions the supplies still on the ship, so the runners return to retrieve them. Sara and Five head down into the hold, where they find a stockpile of guns and ammo. They also hear something shrieking - something that doesn't sound like a zombie. They don't have time to investigate though, as they can smell fuel leaking from somewhere. Everyone leaves the ship. Sara asks the captain what was going on belowdeck, but he only offers a vague answer before throwing a lit flare onto the deck, causing a fuel explosion that destroys the ship. With nothing left to investigate, Sara and the others lead the suvivors back to Abel.[23]

Sara and Five are assigned to test out the effect of dog whistles on zombies. On their way to meet up with Archie and Jamie, they are ambushed by a pack of fast zoms. Sara and Five split up, each trying out different patterns of whistles to see if the zoms respond to them. Five finds a pattern that causes all of the zombies to chase after them and not Sara.[22]

Sara joins a large group of runners from both Abel and New Canton to act as decoys while Runner Five and Archie sneak into one of Van Ark's secret bases.[26]

When Van Ark sees through the decoy plan and captures Archie, Sara suggests to Janine that he might have a spy inside of Abel.[27]

Abel is evacuated due to a dangerous chemical spill. Sara, Five, and Simon are sent towards Dedlock territory to pick up the ingredients Janine needs to create a sealant. As the Dedlock snipers begin shooting at them, Simon splits off from the group to deal with them. Sara and Five manage to find what they were looking for. Major de Santa broadcasts a speech saying that she has a fleet of planes ready to spread Maxine's anti-zombie spray over the entire country, and Sara puts together that this is a part of Project Greenshoot. Sara and Five rush towards Abel as Janine says there's less than an hour before the damage from the chemical spill becomes irreversible; if they don't make it in time, Project Greenshoot is over.[28]

Janine sends Sara, Five, and Jamie into the labs beneath Abel Township to retrieve the leaking canisters. The chemical fumes in the labs cause Jamie and Five to start hallucinating, but Sara manages to stay lucid enough to guide them through grabbing the containers and escaping the labs. Janine manages to seal the leaks before any more damage is done.[29]

Major de Santa sends Sara and Five to a nearby weather station to retrieve some equipment necessary for the deployment of Maxine's anti-zombie serum. At the weather station they encounter Francesca, Abel's old cook who ran away after stealing from the food stores. Francesca has become incredibly paranoid and begins shooting at them as she yells about zombies, the government, and mind control. Five acts as a decoy while Sara sneaks up behind her. Unfortunately Francesca notices Sara before she can get close enough. Terrified of being captured, Francesca chooses to jump from the top of the station and falls to her death. A horde of zombies is attracted by all the noise, so Sara and Five quickly gather the equipment and some of Francesca's hoarded food before returning to Abel.[30]

Sara and Five head out to investigate a supposed transportation of some of Van Ark's audio equipment. Sara asks why Sam is sending her to spy, and he says that she just has a lot of skills that seem like they would suit a spy. Sara insists that she just had a normal office job before the apocalypse. When they reach the target location, they are surprised to run in Ephraim again, who asks for their help in escaping Van Ark's soldiers. Sam tells them they don't have to help him, considering he betrayed them last time they met, but Ephraim mentions that he knows about a spy that Van Ark has inside of Abel, and he won't tell them unless they help him. So they reluctantly agree. They manage to escape the soldiers, but Ephraim is shot and begins bleeding badly. He can no longer run, so Sara and Five help him into a boat and push it away from the shore. As it floats away, Ephraim tells them that Van Ark is putting together a massive army of zombies to attack Abel and New Canton, and that the traitor is the one who the "Major loves best of all".[31]

As Van Ark's army of fast zombies approaches Abel Township, Sara and fourteen other Abel runners head out to meet them, armed with Maxine's anti-zombie spray. Unfortunately, Maxine didn't have time to test this batch and it ends up making the fast zombies faster. Sam tells them to retreat, but then reinforcements arrive from New Canton. In addition, the anti-zombie spray soon takes effect and begins killing the zombies. With the army defeated, Major de Santa gives a triumphant speech.[32]

Sara participates in the memorial service for Runners Five, Six, Ten, and Seventeen in the Forest of Fallen Runners. The ceremony is interrupted by the early arrival of a ship carrying essential fuel, so Sara and the other runners head off to help unload it.[33]

The fuel drums are loaded onto a train headed for Bert Airfield. Sara, Simon, Jody, and Five run alongside it to make sure the tracks are cleared. A bridge ahead of the train has collapsed, so Five pulls a lever to change the tracks. A horde of zombies appears in front of the train - enough that Sam is worried it might get derailed if it hits them. The runners split up: Simon and Jody go one way, and Sara and Five go the other. Sara and Five lead their half of the zombies over the collapsed bridge and into a ravine. Sara notes that the bridge seems like it was collapsed on purpose, just in time for a line of bandits on horseback to appear.[34]

There's another problem in addition to the bandits: both upcoming train tracks are obstructed. One has a concrete block on it and the other has Owen tied to the rails. Sam tells them to abandon the train and let it hit the concrete, but Sara insists that the fuel is more important than Owen's life and changes the course to steer the train towards Owen. Five manages to get to Owen in time and save him. Sam criticizes Sara's lack of concern for her fellow runner. Sara retorts that she had to make the hard decision because there was no way Sam was going to do it. The Girl Guides appear and give the runners some fireworks which they use to spook the bandits' horses, causing them to buck their riders off. The train safely arrives at the airfield.[35]

Sara is out testing Maxine's anti-zombie spray when bandits invade Abel.[36]

With the news that Maxine's anti-zombie spray is ready for deployment and the apocalypse may soon be over, Sara develops an interest in gardening.[37]

Sara and several of the other runners are sent out on a special mission to retrieve vital equipment from Bert Airfield. Major de Santa tells them that they must go radio silent for this mission and sends each of them off alone. On the way to the airfield, Sara contacts somebody via radio, but quickly cuts the connection when she hears Runner Five approaching. The two of them make it to the airfield where they lead some zombies away while Runner Seven refuels the plane and the other runners carry off the equipment. Once the equipment is safely retrieved and the plane refueled, Sara gets ready to climb into the plane, only for Runner Seven to pull out a gun and say he's stealing it to head for his private island in the Caribbean. He offers to let Runner Five join him, but Five refuses. Seven gives them with a backpack full of weapons before taking off in the plane, leaving Sara and Five stranded among a horde of zombies.[38]

Sara attempts to contact Sam for help, but the signal is jammed. She and Five grab some of the weapons and begin fighting their way through the horde. Sara admits to Five that she actually enjoys the apocalypse and that fighting zombies makes her feel alive. She tells them that, while she does miss her husband and sons, she doesn't feel bad knowing that she was the one to kill them. Just as Sara and Five run out of ammo, Runner Seven flies by in the plane and uses its machine guns to clear a path for them. Sara and Five take the opportunity to escape back to Abel. On the way, Sam tells them that the equipment retrieval was just a cover for the real mission: to find out who Abel's traitor is. He tells them that they sent out several groups of runners, and the one that got attacked by zombies must be the one with the traitor, as that would mean someone in that group contacted Van Ark about the mission. And because Sara's group got attacked, that means her group is the one with the traitor.[2]

Sara meets up with Five on a mission to a women's prison to talk with someone who knows who Abel's traitor is. After breaking into the prison they meet their contact, Louise Bailey, who admits that she doesn't know the actual identity of the traitor, but she does know which guard they were talking to, so that guard should be able to identify them. In the process of trying to break back out of the prison, Sara shoots and kills the guard who knows who the traitor is. The Warden closes all the security gates, locking Sara and Five inside.[39]

Sara ends up starting a prison riot to provide them with a distraction and opportunity to find a new escape route. Sara and Five lead the guards into a trap set up by Louise, and Five leads the Warden into her own zombie trap, leaving the prisoners to take control of the building.[40]

Runner Five brings Esteban Sosa to the prison to work out an agreement with the prisoners, but he gets kidnapped by two of the most dangerous prisoners who were released by the Warden - Kander and Stain. Sara, Five, and Louise chase after them. Sara catches up with Stain, who stabs her, causing some of Sara's blood to splash onto Estaban. In return, Sara snaps Stain's neck. As Kander prepares to kill Five in revenge, Sara throws a knife into Kander's chest, killing her.[41]

Right after being rescued, Esteban takes Sara and Five to scout out a nearby government base, even though Sara thinks he should go back to New Canton for medical attention. Soon Esteban begins coughing, then quickly turns into a zombie. As Sara and Five flee, Sam tries to figure out how he got infected in the first place. Sara suggests it happened in New Canton, so Sam calls Nadia to inform her. Five grabs an axe off the wall and beheads Esteban. Sara and Five begin heading back towards Abel. On the way, Sara notices that Sam and Five are behaving strangely and realizes that they've learned the truth - Esteban was infected when Sara's blood splashed onto him, meaning that they've also realized Sara is working with Van Ark. Sara draws a gun on Five and Sam begins blaming her for the deaths of Archie and Jasper. Major de Santa works with New Canton's soldiers to surround the area and orders Sara to surrender. Knowing she's been beaten, Sara gives her gun to Five and allows the soldiers to capture her.[42]

Janine and Major de Santa begin questioning Sara in a secure location. Van Ark sends a horde of fast zombies to retrieve her. Sara manages to slip out of her restraints, breaks Janine's arm, then shoots and kills Major de Santa. Runner Five chases after Sara as she escapes, but Sara pulls out a gun and forces Five to go with her to meet Van Ark.[43]

Season Three[]

In S3M58 (Up), Sara is mentioned as appearing on an ID card labeled "Her Majesty's Secret Service." It accesses a door with a huge Comansys logo and a sign reading "Government Authorized Personnel Only." Runner 5 uses the pass card successfully after Prince Edward's ID is rejected by the scanner.

Season Four[]

Maxine, Paula, and Sam name their daughter Sara, both for Runner 8 and for Paula's grandmother.

Personality[]

Sara has an air of caution around new people, likely due to her calculating and shrewd nature. She appears to be friendly, but is guarded and initially distrustful of strangers. She is fiercely loyal to those who have earned her trust, such as Janine and Major de Santa.

Sara is upfront, blunt, pragmatic, and unflinchingly dedicated to her duty to Abel. She knows what needs to be done in any given situation, and will do it without hesitation or complaint. She loves the adrenaline-fuelled challenge of dangerous situations, and seems to be thriving in the zombie apocalypse. In S2M36 (One way or Another), she described herself as "ruthless," and wonders if she's dead inside.

"Truth is, you know, I love this. I do! You can probably tell. I never feel more alive than when I’m – [zombie growls] Duck down there, Five! [gunshots, zombie splatters] Got him. Yeah, this is what makes me feel alive. Running, thinking on my feet, quick decisions, tactics." - Sara Smith[2]

She is a good shot with a pistol (and is usually armed), but she is also fond of using a meat cleaver on a broom handle as a melee weapon (as described in S1M20 (Listen In)). In S2SM11 (Zombies, Stretch!) it is revealed that she does target practice so she doesn't go "soft."

Relationships[]

Runner Five[]

Sara was highly suspicious of Runner Five at first, due to the unusual circumstances of their arrival at Abel Township. She made her distrust very clear to Five and threatened them on several occasions.

Sara's suspicions lessened over time after she found Five's ID in the crashed helicopter and Five proved themself to be trustworthy.

Sara came to view Five as one of her preferred partners for running missions. She trained Five in marksmanship and entrusted them with the location of a certain item she had hidden away.

Janine de Luca[]

Sara and Janine are friends. They both have a military mindset which means that they work well together on missions.

Major de Santa[]

Sara is highly trusted by the Major.
