The Base Builder is a gameplay mechanic in Zombies, Run! where the player uses the supplies and materials collected during missions to build their own version of Abel Township.

Main Buildings[]

The main buildings are unlocked from the beginning and can be purchased immediately. Three buildings, the Defence Tower, Armoury, and Janine's Farmhouse, are built in fixed positions from the start and cannot be demolished or moved. Five more, the Hospital, Laboratory, Park, Hall of Runners, and Statue of Sam, can be built anywhere but only once. The remaining buildings can be built an unlimited number of times.

Building add-ons are unlocked throughout Season 2 and Season 3 by running missions; the exception is the Park, which was not added until Season 4 and thus has its add-ons unlocked throughout that season (though the Park itself can be purchased right away). The Hall of Runners and Statue of Sam, added in December 2022 to celebrate Zombies, Run!'s 10th anniversary, do not feature add-ons.

Defence Tower[]

The original Abel Township didn't have a defence tower, and it got blown up. The new Abel does have a defence tower, built specially to monitor and combat zombie sieges, and the township is still standing. So far at least.

  • Girl Guides Sign: I promise that I will do my best. Costs 5 supplies and 1 material. Increases morale by 1 and defence by 3. Unlocked with: S02ES06 Trefoil. Requires level 2.
  • Flags: These fly at full mast when all Runners are home safely. Costs 5 supplies and 1 material. Increases defence by 4 and morale and 4. Unlocked with: S02E41 You Know My Name. Requires level 4.

Janine's Farmhouse[]

The beating heart of Abel Township. Its sturdy stone walls and acres of surrounding land make Janine's family home the perfect cornerstone on which to build a home for survivors of the zombie apocalypse. Again. (Size 2x2)

Level 1: Provides 25 population, 35 max population, and 5 morale; no cost (provided automatically).
Level 2: Provides 5 population, 15 max population, and 5 morale; costs 15 supplies and 2 materials; Requires 100 population and defence at least 50%.
Level 3: Provides 5 population, 15 max population, and 5 morale; costs 30 supplies and 4 materials; Requires 240 population, defence at least 75% and morale of at least 75%.
Level 4: Provides 5 population, 15 max population, and 5 morale; costs 50 supplies and 6 materials; Requires 450 population, defence at least 90% and morale of at least 90%.

  • Archie Memorial: Archie always loved the word 'memorial'. Costs 5 supplies and 1 material. Increases morale by 4. Unlocked with: S02E18 Dark and Long. Requires level 2.
  • Flowerbeds: Bringing a bit of colour to Abel. Costs 5 supplies and 1 material. Increases morale by 4. Unlocked with: S02E31 Hello. Requires level 4.

Communications[]

Sam Yao's favourite place in Abel. He's usually here guiding runners on a mission or chatting with other settlements via RoffleNet. He tends to leave it in a state of organised chaos which Janine likes to refer to as "that bloody mess." (Size: 1x2)

Housing[]

As Abel grows, so too does the need for more living space. Camping in the quad is fine in July, but as winter approaches the residents clamour for something a little warmer. Requests for en-suite facilities have so far been sadly fruitless. (Size: 1x2)

Armoury[]

Guns have become quite the commodity since the apocalypse began. The armoury is Abel's vault for the majority of weapons found out in the field. Handy when trading with nearby settlements. Or killing zombies. (Size: 3x3)

Hospital[]

Dr. Myers spend her waking hours here making sure the Township residents are of Abel body and mind. Maxine patches up Runners and rations the medical supplies for day-to-day ailments, maladies and sniffles. Only one Hospital allowed per base. (Size: 3x3)

Playground[]

It's not easy growing up during an apocalypse. Video games and films may be a rationed luxury, but swings and slides have no such restrictions. Abel's large manchild population visit more than the actual kids do. (Size: 2x1)

Funnily enough, the local supermarkets haven't been restocking nearly as frequently since the zombies appeared. In response, the residents of Abel Township have been taking advantage of Janine's farmland in a quest for self-sufficiency. (Size: 2x1)

Runners aren't born, they're made. The is where Runners undergo a rigorous training programme to make sure they're on top form. After all, it's only a matter of time before a slow Runner becomes a dead Runner. (Size: 3x3)

Laboratory[]

Dr. Myers can only take her research into the zombie outbreak so far in Abel's makeshift hospital. This specially designed research laboratory will allow for further research into the undead nightmare. Only one laboratory allowed per base. (Size: 2x1)

Who doesn't love a bit of green space? Especially when that green space is guaranteed zom-free due to being inside Abel Township's walls. Residents can relax and forget the world outside - for a while. (Size 3x3)

Hall of Runners[]

Hall of Runners

Abel Township wouldn't be nearly as prosperous or well-defended if it weren't for the hard work, commitment and courage of its runners, and so to mark Abel's anniversary, the township has come together to establish the Hall of Runners. The Hall of Runners serves to preserve the history of Abel Township, to honour those who have fallen, and to celebrate every brave soul who has served as an Abel Township Runner. To our runners, from the bottom of our hearts: thank you. We truly couldn't do it without you. (Size 1x1)

Statue of Sam[]

To celebrate Abel's tenth anniversary (and despite Sam's flustered protestations), the township's runners have voted to commission a statue of everyone's favourite comms officer! It's taken some work and a bit of bribery to wrangle, but between the promise of Curly-Wurlys and a DVD box set of the Tom Baker-era Doctor Who generously on loan from Dr Myers, the runners have successfully managed to convince Sam to sit for sculpting sessions. (Size 1x1)

Costs 25 supplies and 3 materials. Increases morale by 15.

Mission Unlockable Buildings[]

Beginning in Season 2, special buildings are unlocked upon the completion of certain missions. These buildings usually have the dimensions of 1x1, normally cost 20 supplies and 3 materials, and are only allowed to be placed once per base. Beginning in Season 4, unlockable buildings become more expensive; some unlockable buildings are also larger and feature upgrades and add-ons like the main buildings.

Water Treatment[]

Dr. Myers won't shut up about the Water Treatment Unit. "Think of the reduction in day-to-day stomach bugs!" and "We'll save so much medicine!" and "Oh my god! Is that a spider in my water?!"

Vegetable Patch[]

A dedicated allotment for Abel's hobbyist gardeners. While the farm serves the township with practical, nutritious food, the vegetable patch is the place to find such luxuries as asparagus and strawberries.

With electricity in short supply, books are back in fashion. History, science, philosophy...all of humanity's achievements are kept in the library. Plus, more importantly, a (now) complete set of Harry Potter books.

Tequila Shack[]

Tequila levels have been dwindling since the apocalypse, what with its base ingredient, blue agave, being in short supply near Abel. So the arrival of a fully stocked Tequila Shack has been met with great enthusiasm.

Pharmacy[]

Closer to an old-school apothecary than a modern pharmacy. Here, residents of Abel can obtain medicines prescribed by Dr. Myers, with not a chup-a-chups lollipop or set of plastic combs to be seen.

Paddling Pool[]

Paddling pool

Not exactly an olympic-sized swimming pool, but the residents of Abel are used to taking what they can get. On a sunny day the paddling pool is the place to be. Even Janine can be found dipping her feet in from time to time.

The dead rising from the grave. Dogs and cats living together. Yes, it's the end of the world. Thankfully, the cute faces and soft fur of the puppies and kittens at Abel Kennels are a great distraction from the zombie apocalypse.

Though definitely one of the more... unexpected bits of equipment ever salvaged by a group of Runners, Abel's trampoline has been a smash hit with the township's young and young at heart. Dr Myers is anxious to avoid any trampoline-related injuries, however, so Janine has instituted some safety guidelines when getting one's bounce on.
Rule 1: Only one person on the trampoline at a time.
Rule 2: Children under six should not use a full-size trampoline.
Rule 3: Under NO circumstances should you double bounce or allow yourself to be double bounced. (Unless, as Sam points out, you happen to be fending off a zombie - in which case double bounce that zom to smithereens!)

Abel Township's recording studio may have started out in a shed with a couple of cheap microphones, a short-circuiting amp, and a mouse problem, but over time, it's become a proper studio. Eagle-eyed Runners have been able to salvage some pretty impressive equipment over the years, much to the delight of the Abel's sound engineers - though there are elements of its humble beginnings that are hard to shake. Turns out, lining the walls with mattresses works a treat to block out the moans of the undead!

Haunted House[]

Despite Janine's insistence that there's 'no such thing as ghosts' and that the old, rambling house on the outskirts of town is 'simply dilapidated', Abel's spookier residents have designated the building 'absolutely 100% haunted'.

People have reported hearing strange noises coming from the house late at night, and seeing lights in the windows despite the grounds being completely cut off from Abel's electrical grid. On a rare night, you might even be able to see an odd silhouette in the attic window...

Other than a stalwart and adorable communications operator, there's very little as important to Abel Township's runners as having a good, durable pair of running shoes. Unfortunately, even the most well-made pair of trainers eventually falls apart when you're running as often as Abel's runners do - but luckily that's where Abel Township's shoe cobbler comes in! The waitlist to have your shoes repaired might be a little on the longer side given the cobbler's popularity with Abel's runners, but having your favourite pair of trainers resoled by an expert is generally considered to be well worth the wait.

Ferris Wheel[]

Abel's new ferris wheel has been a huge hit with the township's residents, serving as both a rather unique spotter's tower and a welcome throwback to pre-apocalyptic fun.
No one's entirely sure how exactly Runner Five was able to salvage an entire mini ferris wheel wheel from a long-abandoned fun fair, though. Some people say that Five must have brought the ferris wheel back to Abel bit by bit over the course of several months. Others suggest that they might have had help transporting it back to town, possibly from one of the nearby settlements. Then there are those who insist, with absolute terrifying certainty, that they saw Runner Five dragging the entire thing back to Abel with them.

Dr Myers and Sam have money on the latter, but until someone gets Runner Five to talk, the origin of Abel's ferris wheel will remain a mystery.

Abel Township's new cement factory is a modest but sturdy structure, capable of producing enough cement to meet the needs of a small settlement and its surrounding area.
